If you or a loved one has been told you need a hysterectomy, it can be a scary and challenging time. One in three women in the US will have a hysterectomy by the age of 60,but there are new techniques and technology making the surgery easier and less invasive.
What is a Hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is the removal of your uterus; it can be done for a variety of reasons, from endometriosis to pelvic pain to cancer of the uterus. Usually, a hysterectomy is considered in non-cancerous patients only as a last resort, after all other treatments have been attempted.
During a hysterectomy, a doctor can choose to remove all or part of your uterus. Now, with these developments, a hysterectomy can be done in a variety of ways, either through one large incision or through a series of smaller incisions.
The da Vinci System
The da Vinci system is a minimally invasive surgical option for removing your uterus. It helps the surgeon with robotic technology to allow more articulate, tiny incisions across the belly in order to remove your uterus. It also includes an instrument called a laparoscope, which has a little camera and light on the end of a piece of tubing. The laparoscope takes images and helps to guide the surgeon while you are in surgery, ensuring the procedure is done quickly and effectively. Although robotically assisted by the da Vinci system, the surgeon is always in control during the procedure. There are a lot of benefits to using this system, such as fewer complications, fewer blood transfusions, less blood loss and less operative time.
What to Expect After a da Vinci Hysterectomy
As with any surgery, there are associated risks. It takes time to heal your incisions and get back to normal life. But, the da Vinci system should minimize healing time, and it is proven to shorten the length of your hospital stay. You should be able to fully recover. If you are pre-menopausal, you may enter menopause after the removal of your uterus. You will probably be advised by your doctor not to lift heavy objects or partake in any sexual activities for up to 6 weeks post-surgery.
