As a woman, it is normal to have your period around every 28 days, but sometimes it can be more often or less frequent. Missed or irregular periods can be extremely frustrating. Not only can it be cause for concern, sometimes it isn’t the easiest riddle to answer. The reasons for missed or irregular periods can vary. It can be a symptom of something bigger or just a fluctuation in your body.

Stress Can Cause Missed or Irregular Periods
Stress can affect our bodies in a multitude of negative ways. From headaches to bad moods, stress is never fun for you or your body. It can have a huge effect on your period as well. The fight or flight response stress causes sends out adrenaline and cortisol throughout your body, which can, at times, affect your period.
Weight gain, weight loss and excessive exercise can have an impact on your period. Big fluctuations in your weight can affect your hormones, which, in turn, cause your menstrual cycle to fluctuate. If you pursue extreme weight loss, and change your diet and caloric intake, it may cause your period to change as well. At the other extreme, weight gain causes your body to produce estrogen, which will definitely influence your time of the month. Even extreme exercise is known to alter or stop periods as well.
Birth control or morning after pills can be the number one culprit in missed or irregular periods. Other medications you take can have an effect as well. Missed or irregular periods stemming from medications like antidepressants or chemotherapy drugs usually have to do with an interruption in hormones enough to offset your cycle.
If you are experiencing weight loss, rapid heartbeats, trouble sleeping and sweating issues, it could be a thyroid problem. This, also, could be causing missed or irregular periods. Either an underactive thyroid (hypothydrodism) or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can affect your cycle and your general health.
Up to eight years before your body goes through menopause, you can experience perimenopause. Perimenopause is when the menopause process starts, and your body begins to create less and less estrogen. Although it is normal to experience fluctuations in your cycle at this time, talking to a doctor is always a good idea.
